Change Your Life, Change the World...
                                                  through an UrbanSpirit internship
One summer can mean an awful lot.

What do interns do? You'll work with our director to facilitate poverty immersion experiences for groups from across the country. You'll coordinate projects, manage group activities, sweat, sing, plan meals, pray, negotiate space and scheduling, share experiences, and learn a lot.
Where do interns live? You'll live in the church dormitory, in a designated "staff room," with access to the main house and office for off-duty leisure, laundry and other amenities.
How much time to interns work? From June 1 until about August 30, during each week that we have a group on site, you'll be "on" from early morning until late in the evening -- the first one up and the last to bed each night. You'll have a 24-hour period each week completely off duty, minimally. There tend to be short blocks of time during each week when groups are otherwise engaged and don't require your presence. There may be other times when rotating responsibilities is possible.
How much do interns earn? Not a lot. We pay a small stipend, and we work with you to try to arrange academic credit or other financial assistance. Though the cash rewards are low, the experience is invaluable. You'll learn about poverty and privilege, and see social realities in a new way; you'll also learn to recognize human emotional processes and gain (or sharpen) leadership skills relating group dynamics and community development.
How many positions are available? Two, perhaps more. We need one man and one woman, but are open to others, as seminaries and colleges work with us to fund the positions.
Is training or experience required? Sort of. We need folks with a sense of social justice, but even more, we need people who are willing to learn. Social work students, seminarians, urban studies majors and others will find this a nice fit with their long-term visions. No particular faith adherence is required, but you need to be comfortable accompanying people who are on a spiritual journey. We will have a bit of orientation together as the summer begins, and you will be asked to do some light pre-reading.
Are there age or other requirements? Yes. You must be 18 and recommended by a counselor, minister or professor. You must possess a measure of emotional maturity and common sense. You must be willing to work hard and learn. You must be able to pass a background check. UrbanSpirit does not discriminate based on race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity. Our facilities, however, are not yet completely accessible by wheelchair.
How can I apply? Simply complete the application and submit it by mail (PO Box 11434, Louisville, KY  40251) or email (ravdeb@urbanspirit.org). If you need more info, email Deb.
