What is it like to live on minimum wage in America? Find out in the Poverty Immersion for College Students!
An inspiring alternative to the beach, this poverty simulation will • challenge your assumptions • change your perspective • make you angry • energize you for action In this guided simulation, you’ll work, live and reflect, earn low wages and try to provide the things your family needs. From the moment you arrive, you step into the world of the working poor — tens of millions of Americans who work hard and never really get anywhere. Food, shelter, work, health care, transportation, child care, hygiene, leisure — it all becomes part of the challenge as you try to make a life from little. It’s about choices, control over your life’s circumstances, surprises and anxieties you encounter day-to-day, and about how it never ever ends. No simulation is perfect, but this one will push you to your limits, and leave you wondering how we let people live this way. We’ll consider Jesus and some prophets (ancient and modern), Marx, Roosevelt (Eleanor!) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, even a few other manifestos written by some folks looking for meaning. The work is real, the reward is real, the consequences are real. This is a challenging program; you'll experience the ugly underbelly of a system in need of reform and learn tools for creating change in you own community. When you're done, you'll get a diploma and you'll know that you've earned it. One week of poverty. One day on public transportation. One missed meal. One opportunity for growth. One very powerful experience. Program Costs Cost is $295 per person for this Poverty Immersion College Week. That includes all program fees and leadership, lodging and meals. You just have to get yourself to and from Louisville. Plan to arrive by 3 pm Sunday; depart anytime Saturday.

“When I first met you on Sunday night, I wasn’t sure that the next week was gonna work out. By Thursday, I was really sick of this place, and I wanted to leave. But on Friday, I really started to realize what I had learned, and I really appreciate all you did for us.” -guest reflection
